Description:

Betaxol is a sterile eye drops containing Betaxolol Hydrochloride, a selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent.

Composition:

Each ml contains Betaxolol Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Betaxolol 2.5 mg.

Pharmacology:

Betaxolol is a potent, long-acting B1-selective adrenoceptor-blocking drug. The ocular hypertensive action of betaxolol appears to be mediated by a reduction of aqueous production.

Indication:

Indicated for lowering intraocular pressures and may be used in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Dosage and Administration:

The usual dose is 1-2 drops of Betaxol Eye Drops in the affected eye(s) twice daily. It may be used alone or in combination with other intraocular pressure lowering medications.

Contraindication:

Hypersensitivity to any component of this product.

Side-effect:

Betaxolol has been well tolerated. Instances of decreased corneal sensitivity, erythema, itching sensation, corneal punctate staining, keratitis, anisocoria and photophobia, blurred vision have been reported.

Precaution:

Although ophthalmic betaxolol has demonstrated a low potential for systemic effects, it should be used with caution in patients with bradycardia, and those with diabetes.

Drug Interactions:

Although ophthalmic betaxolol used alone has little or no effect on pupil size, mydriasis resulting from concomitant therapy with epinephrine has been reported occasionally. Caution should be exercised in patients using concomitant adrenergic psychotropic drugs.

Use in Pregnancy:

There have been no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Use in Lactation:

It is not known whether betaxolol is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when ophthalmic betaxolol is administered to nursing mother.

Use in Children:

Clinical studies to establish the safety and efficacy in children have not been performed.

Storage:

Store at room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children.
