IPEC

Iron Polymaltose Complex

Description:

Ipec is a preparation of iron hydroxide polymaltose complex, an iron formulation that is used to treat iron deficiency anemia

Composition:

Each 5 ml contains iron hydroxide polymaltose complex INN 200 mg equivalent to 50 mg of elemental iron.

Pharmacology:

Iron (III) polymaltose complex is a water-soluble, macro molecular complex of polynuclear iron (III) hydroxide and partially hydrolyzed dextrin (polymaltose). It is rapidly absorbed with a high rate of iron utilization and produces an effective increase in hemoglobin.

Indications:

Prevention and treatment of all kinds of iron deficiencies particularly iron deficiency anemia.

Dosage and administration:

Adult: 10 ml 1-2 times daily during or after meal. Child under 12 years: 5 ml 1-2 times daily during or after meal. Infant: Start with 2.5 ml daily and increase to 5 ml daily.

Contraindications:

Disturbances in iron utilization, thalassemia. Hypersensitivity or intolerance to iron and overloading of iron in the body. Anemia not caused by iron deficiency. Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the formulation.

Side-effect:

Ipec is well tolerated. Occasionally gastrointestinal irritations such as sensation of repletion pressure in the epigastric region, nausea, constipation or diarrhea can occur.

High Risk Group:

Reproduction studies in animals did not show any fetal risk. Controlled studies in pregnant women after the first trimester have not shown any undesirable effects on mother and neonates. There is no evidence of a risk during the first trimester and the possibility of a negative influence to the fetus is unlikely to occur. Mother’s milk contains iron bound to lactoferrin. It is not known how much iron from the complex is passed into mother’s milk. The administration of Ipec is unlikely to cause undesirable effects to the nursed child.

Precautions:

As with all iron preparations, a dark coloration of the stool may occur which is without clinical significance.

Overdosage:

No intoxication or iron overloaded has been reported in case of overdose.

Drug interaction:

No interactions have been found between Ipec and food or between Ipec and other drugs due to its non-ionic nature.

Storage:

Keep in a cool and dry place, protect from light and moisture.

Packing:

Bottle contains 100 ml syrup.
