Glucosamine Sulphate & Chondroitin Sulphate

Description:
Glucosamine and chondroitin are components of
the proteoglycans, which are compounds that supply joint cartilage
with some of its structural properties and shock-absorbing functions.
Glucosamine is a long chain amino acid, which occurs naturally
in cartilage and is the major building block of the proteoglycans
and is used specifically to produce glycosaminoglycans (GAG's).
Chondroitin, like glucosamine, is a mucopolysaccharide found
in cartilage and helps to elevate the fluid levels in the synovial
fluid in the joints as it binds to collagen.
Composition:
Each film-coated tablet contains Glucosamine
sulphate INN 250 mg and Chondroitin sulphate INN 200 mg.
Pharmacology:
Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is the building
block for certain glycosaminoglycans. In vitro, it has been
shown to stimulate proteoglycan synthesis by human chondrocytes.
It also has some innate anti-inflammatory properties, independent
of prostaglandin synthesis. Glucosamine is also involved in
the formation of nails, tendons, skin, eyes, bones, ligaments
and other connective tissues in the body. Glucosamine is absorbed
rapidly from the intestine, and transported to the connective
tissues. It helps in the restoration of damaged joint tissue
in osteoarthritis.
Chondroitin sulphate is a glycosaminoglycan and
is a main constituent of proteoglycans. Like glucosamine, it
has been shown to stimulate proteoglycan synthesis by human
chondrocytes. Chondroitin sulphate also has some innate anti-inflammatory
properties.
Indications:
Relief of osteoarthritis. Other recommended uses
are for tendonitis and bursitis. It decreases pain and improves
mobility in people suffering from osteoarthritis. It has been
suggested, by some sources, that it may even prevent or postpone
the development of osteoarthritis in certain groups, such as
the elderly and the athletes.
Dosage and Administration:
1-2 tablets three times daily.
Contraindications:
Not known.
Precautions:
Patients allergic to sulphates should take care during treatment
with this drug.
Use in pregnancy and lactation:
The Arthritis Association recommends taking cautions
in the use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate during pregnancy
& lactation
Side-effects:
Rare cases of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea have been reported.
Drug Interactions:
There is no interaction of glucosamine with blood
pressure medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,
and for diabetics on hypoglycaemic agents (but close monitoring
of blood sugar levels is recommended).
Chondroitin sulphate may interact with blood
thinning medications like heparin.
