SILVADAZIN Cream

Silver Sulfadiazine 1%

Description:

Silvadazin (Silver Sulfadiazine 1% cream) is the silver salt of N1 (Pyrimidin-2-y1) sulphanilamide. It is used topically for the prevention & treatment of infection of wounds from burns. It is effective against Gram-positive & Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, yeast & fungi. It has a bactericidal action in contrast to Sulfadiazine, the silver salt acts primarily on the cell membrane & cell wall & its action is not antagonized by p-amino-benzoic acid. The compound is painless upon application. It has a pleasant cooling effect to the burnt surface. It is considered by most authorities to be the drug of choice for the prevention of infection of burns.

Composition:

Each gram cream contains Silver Sulfadiazine USP 10 mg.

Absorption and Fate:

A little silver is absorbed. Silver is released from the preparation in concentrations that are selectively toxic to the microorganism. Up to about 10% of the Sulfadiazine may be absorbed. Concentrations in blood of 10 to 20 mcg per ml have been reported although higher concentrations may be achieved when extensive areas of the body are treated. Silver Sulfadiazine is slowly metabolized in contact with wound exudates.

Uses and Administration:

Silvadazin is used in conjunction with debridement for the prevention & treatment of infection, particularly by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in severe burns. Silvadazin is usually applied daily to a thickness of 3to5 mm by a sterile spatula or gloved hand. Treatment is continued until healing is progressing satisfactorily or the burn site is ready for skin grafting. Silvadazin has also been used in other skin conditions such as leg ulcers, where infection may prevent healing.

Adverse Effects & Precautions:

Local reactions such as burning, itching, rash have been reported in patients treated with Silver Sulfadiazine. The separation of eschar may be delayed & fungal invasion of the wound may occur. Transient leucopenia has occurred although its association with application of Silver Sulfadiazine has not been consistently confirmed.

Contraindications:

It should not be used to treat an established infection. It is also contraindicated to patients hypersensitive to sulphonamides.

Storage:

Store in a cool a dry place (below 250 C) & away from light. The tube should be tightly closed. Keep out of the reach of children.
