THIOBION
Thiamine

Description:
The active ingredient
of Thiobion is a synthetic thiamine as hydrochloride,
which has the same biological activity as natural vitamin B1.
The thiamine requirement is directly correlated with the carbohydrate
intake. As a rough guide, the requirement is 0.4 mg per 1000
calories. When the diet is rich in carbohydrates, the vitamin
B1 intake should be adapted accordingly.
Composition:
Each tablet contains
Thiamine hydrochloride BP 100 mg.
Indications:
Thiobion
is specific in the treatment of the various manifestations of
thiamine deficiency such as beriberi and Wernicke's encephalopathy,
neuritis associated with pregnancy and pellagra. Supplementary
Thiobion may be indicated prophylactically in conditions
where there is low dietary intake or impaired gastrointestinal
absorption of thiamine (e.g. alcohol) or where requirements
are increased (Pregnancy, Carbohydrate-rich diet).
Dosage &
administration:
Severe deficiency:
200-300 mg daily or as advised by the physician.
Precaution:
Mild allergic phenomena,
such as sneezing or mild asthma are warning signs that further
tablet may give rise to anaphylactic shock. To avoid this possibility
it is advisable to start a second course of tablet with a second
course of tablet with a dose considerably lower than that previously
used.
Contraindications:
It is contraindicated
in patients with known hypersensitivity to thiamine.
Side-effects:
Pruritus, urticaria,
weakness, nausea, anorexia, angioneurotic oedema, cyanosis,
pulmonary oedema, gastro-intestinal haemorrhage, etc. may occur.
Anaphylactic reactions have occasionally been produced by tablet
of thiamine given alone and sudden death has been reported,
this risk of anaphylactic shock increases with repeated administration
by the parenteral route.
