Nitrofurantoin (Utifin SR) is highly soluble in urine and there it inactivates or alters bacterial ribosomal proteins and inhibit bacterial enzymes involved in the synthesis of DNA, RNA, cell wall protein synthesis & other metabolic enzymes. It is highly effective against Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus and certain susceptible strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. This is a sustained-release capsule preparation. This sustained-release action allows for a more convenient twice-daily dosing schedule compared to immediate-release versions that require four doses a day. For the best results, it should be taken with food, which can increase its effectiveness in the urine and help to reduce common side effects like nausea or stomach upset.
